“Aspen Whispers” is my abstract interpretation of the experience of walking in the Colorado forest-in an aspen grove in particular. There’s the emotional side, which for me is marveling at the awe-inspiring beauty of nature. Then there’s the tactile side, which is an overwhelming need touch everything. The bark of the trees, the yellow leaves and the need to just sit in that space as long as you can.

Many artists are inspired by nature and create amazing pieces ranging from sublime realism to a more abstract interpretation but with a recognizable subject matter.  I chose to go the more abstract route and have done versions of the same rendition of aspens painted on handmade paper more than 8 times with different large-scale works. This was my first piece in the “Aspen Whispers” series. In this piece, the handmade paper has ropes of thin twine covering the whole piece in texture; texture that you can’t help but want run your fingers over.  The paint used to cover the surface of canvas and paper has an “uncontrolled” feel to it, but was done in a “controlled” way.

This particular one was done in the softer and warmer colors of fall. But with a bleached out version of “the sun shining through” so just like anything in direct sunlight, it has a more anemic or whitewashed palate.  The little color that is seen is of soft greens representing the surrounding evergreens in an abstract depiction.  The aspen’s leaves are painted with a gold metallic pigment.  The reflective quality gives the art a sense of movement like “shining, shimmering leaves blowing in the wind.”

Colorado and all it’s many versions will always be a source of inspiration and my number one muse.  I honestly can’t see myself living anywhere else.

The deep maroons, reds, gold’s, deep greens and the creamy whites dance in the hyperactive shapes and lines giving the viewer believable motion on canvas. This oil like so many of my painting leans toward very warm tones. I love playing with colors and how they react with the ones next to them. Along side that I really love the reflective colors that continually make an appearance in my art. The use of gold, copper and silver leafing helps in the waxing and waning of light that constantly reflects off the surface. It's adorned with texture, shapes and the flourishing color making the balance of harmony come to

"November"

“November” Dried Colorado weeds. Set of 3 Large Plexiglass 3/4 inch thick 36” x 48” each / Total hanging space 112” x  48” /  Mounted with 2” Heavy Duty Stainless Steel Glass Standoffs - Art Hangs Out 3” from Wall Painted with Metallic Pigment, and Acrylic Paint “November” is the title of this Plexiglas Triptych and with good reason.  If you live in Colorado like I have for my entire life, the color of summer has disappeared, and what remains tends to be a monochromatic landscape of hidden beauty in brown and golden hues. The warm background color that is represented here is painted on the back side of this ¾” solid Plexiglas, while the front is hidden (because Plexiglas comes with its surface covered with a large opaque adhesive covering to prevent scratching and damage).   The colors in “November” are made with metallic pigments so there is a tendency to feel like you are looking at a mirage or at the very least, art that seems to move with the reflectiv
